THE PLACE OF ICT IN THE SUCCESSFUL
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE EDUCATION REFORM UNDER NEEDS AND
MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDGs)
ABSTRACT:
This paper presents an attempt to examine the place of ICT in
the successful implementation of NEEDS' education reform
programme (NERP) and that of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Apart from the discussion of some relevant aspects of both NERP
and MDGs, the paper contains an examination of the concept of
ICT, the role of ICT in the implementation of NERP and MDGs as
well as a word for head teachers and principals. The paper
concludes with some recommendations one of which is that serving
teachers should be given the opportunity within a specific
period to become ICT in education literate through in-service
education.

ASSESSING PEACE EDUCATION COMPONENT OF THE
UNIVERSAL BASIC EDUCATION IN NIGERIA THROUGH SOCIAL STUDIES
CURRICULUM
ABSTRACT:
This paper describes the findings of survey aimed at assessing
peace education component of the Universal Basic Education in
Nigeria through Social Studies curriculum. The background
information reveals the urgent need for peace education in
Nigeria. Three research questions guided the study. The
contributions of this paper are in its attempt to present the
extent Nigeria has gone in implementing peace education and give
suggestions on what should be done to achieve the successful
establishment of a culture of peace among Nigerians.

QUEST FOR TEACHER NEEDED COMPETENCIES FOR
INSTRUCTIONAL USE OF ICT
ABSTRACT:
The aim of this paper was to identify the competencies needed by
teachers for the development and implementation of ICT-based
education. The study which covered 19 member countries of
European Union was guided by three research questions. Data were
collected through the use of emailed questionnaire and analysed
using frequencies and percentages. Some personal, pedagogical
and subject oriented/didactical competencies were identified.
Among the recommendations was that the Federal Government should
make the development of ICT competencies of teachers a priority
and set targets when all teachers should become ICT-literate to
mandatory standards.

INVESTIGATING THE NEED FOR
EMPOWERMENT-ORIENTED CURRICULUM FOR GIRLS
ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the need for
empowerment-oriented curriculum for girls. The study which
covered one university each from Anambra and Enugu States
respectively was guided by three research questions. Data were
collected through the use of questionnaire. The major finding
was that the girls did not manifest adequate self-confidence. It
was concluded that girl-empowerment ideals should be reflected
in all aspects of curriculum development and implementation for
girls. Among the recommendations was that girls should be
exposed to empowerment-oriented curriculum to enable them
develop self-respect, self-confidence and the ability to take
intelligent decisions.

INTRODUCTION:
The establishment of the Teachers Registration Council of
Nigeria (TRCN) in 1993, was a big boost to the status of
teaching in the country. This is because it was the fulfillment
of an important criteria required for teaching to get the status
of a profession. Since its establishment, the TRCN has been
working relentlessly to uphold the teaching profession in the
country. Some prominent actions of the TRCN in this regard are:
the launching of campaign for the registration of teachers,
initiating awareness and organizing continuous training and
professional development programmes for teachers and holding
regular and consultations with stakeholder and programme
partner. With these activities, the TRCN is creating awareness
among teachers and even the public of the requirements of the
teaching profession. It is remarkable that teachers are
responding favourably to the activities of the TRCN. For

INVESTIGATING GOVERNMENT STRATEGIES FOR
PROMOTING DISTANCE LEARNING THROUGH INFORMATION AND
COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (ICT) EDUCATION
ABSTRACT:
This paper presents a study which was conducted to identify
strategies the government can adopt for promoting distance
learning through covered was ICT education. The study which
covered 19 member countries of the European Union was guided by
two research questions. The major findings were that government
strategies include working in partnership with stakeholders in
the provision of ICT facilities in schools and launching
national plans for the promotion of ICT in education.
